Two Story, Detached House, 3,200 sqft
A study was carried out on the home that took into account their energy usage, how the home is lived in and the climate conditions at the time. This study established a 50% saving throughout the boiler season and shows the impact the Solar Central Heating would have on the home had it been installed in January 2012. This study shows a comparison between the old oil heating system and the Fusion Elite solar central heating.

An initial survey of the home and home owners was carried out and the results are in the Home Energy Usage Survey.

Taking all the relevant data into account this study shows the difference in boiler usage, hours of heat and money spent heating the home. The study shows the difference the Fusion Elite Solar Central Heating System will make. Fuel prices and energy cost are taken at rates set out by SEAI http://www.seai.ie/Publications/Statistics_Publications/Fuel_Cost_Comparison/

History of Heat in the House
The house was getting on average 4 hours of heat per day over the year. Even though the house was very well insulated the house was not warm. The kitchen and dining area was over 350sq ft and was the most difficult part of the house to keep heated.

Throughout the past two years the home has burned €2,500 of heating oil each year to heat the house and hot water. The boiler was the only source of water heating in the house as the immersion was never used. They also used an open fire at a cost of €500 per year. It was costing €3.26 per hour to heat the house.

After Solar Central Heating Installed
A LTS Fusion Elite solar central heating system was installed on the 6th October 2013. Over the first 6-8 weeks the system brought the house up to temperature allowing the building to absorb the heat and become a thermal store.

The house has never been warmer running at a temperature of 19°C all day, all year round. The family have all the hot water needs meet and have ample hot water for the four daily showers and the weekly bath. The heat in the home before and after the Fusion Elite system are as follows:

During the first three months of 2012 and 2013 the house used €1000 worth of heating oil, for the same period in 2014 they purchased €500 (560 lt) of heating oil. On the 31st March 2014 there was 284lt of unused oil in the tank.Let’s Talk Solar Fusion Elite solar central heating system cut the heating bills in the house by over 50%.

A week by week analysis was taken for the running cost for the old heating system compared to the Fusion Elite system from 1st January 2012 to the 31st March 2014. The cost of running old oil heating system for this time period is €5,212. The Fusion Elite system will make a minimum of 50% reduction in boiler usage throughout the boiler season. The reduction in boiler usage for the production of heat and hot water results in a saving of €3,287 from 1st January 2012 to 31st March 2014. The graph below shows the weekly spend comparison.

Running cost comparison of Old System V Solar Heating week by week January 2012 to March 2014

On a typical winters week it was costing €75 to run the boiler giving the home approximately 32 hours of heat. The same week with the Fusion Elite solar central heating system gives 168 hour of heat for just €31. Over the summer the Fusion Elite system removes the need for the boiler to provide hot water.

The house is now being heated 24 hours a day with the Fusion Elite solar central heating system compared to the 4 house a day with the traditional system. The difference, in 2013, the boiler ran for 940 hours and produces 828 hours of heat (112 hours of boiler usage for hot water in the summer). The Fusion Elite solar central heating system calls on the boiler for 414 hours for the year. The graph shows the difference in boiler usage in the two systems.

Hours of boiler usage of Old System V Solar Heating week by week January 2012 to March 2014.

Operating on a 50% reduction in heating oil the Fusion Elite solar central heating system gives 6,662 hours of heat in to the home and all provides all the homes hot water. The graph below illustrates the 168 hours of heat that is delivered by the Fusion Elite every week, opposed to the average 30 hours of heat delivered by the traditional boiler heating system. This is shows week by week from 1st January 2012 up to the 31st March 2014 and clearly illustrates the additional hour heat delivered into the home each week

Compare number of hours heat Old System V Solar Heating week by week January 2012 to March 2014

Over the 117 week period the traditional oil heating system would produce 2,215 hours of heat while the Fusion Elite system will produce 15,288 hours of heat.

Conclusion

The Fusion Elite solar central heating system cuts boiler usage by 50% throughout the boiler season and eliminates the boiler usage for hot water in the summer and the need for solid fuel. The result is a 63% cost saving over the 27 month of the study period and a 690% increase in the number of hours heat, see Table 1.
